Addiction is often called “the family disease” because when one-member struggles, the entire family suffers. Our family counsellor is available to loved ones of individuals struggling with addiction.

We help family members understand what addiction means, provide coping mechanisms to deal with its consequences, and help bridge the healing process. We introduce healthy skills to cope with emotions and offer a safe and guided environment where family members can be heard and supported. We encourage family members to be supportive and helpful – without allowing past behaviours to resurface.

Unfortunately, not all outcomes are positive, and our counsellor can be a support to family members who have lost their loved ones as a result of addiction.

Our family counselling is available by donation, with no family member ever turned away for lack of funds.

Education

Umbrella is pleased to offer a series of community conversations called Understanding addiction: A crisis in our community. These discussions are led by local experts and they address and deconstruct the many facts and fictions about addiction.

During the five sessions, registered participants will be challenged while we learn, discuss and share about a range of topics, including our belief systems, the cause of addiction, community impact, harm reduction, impact on family, recovery, and what we can do collectively to address this crisis.

These learning series are designed for adults who want to learn facts and dispel myths, break down the stigma of addiction, network with other engaged community members and be a part of the addiction solution. Feedback from our two previous sessions has been very positive with participants citing an increase in connection, knowledge, resources and community.
