Physicians are ideally placed to identify patients for whom substance use has become a problem. They are often able to have the first difficult conversation about the substance abuse and its effects. In partnership with the Victoria Division of Family Practice, we developed this pilot program to support physicians who are not always up-to-date on substance use services. Lack of information can limit a doctor’s ability to provide in-depth care and adequate follow-up. The Umbrella Society works in collaboration with local physicians, who provide invaluable medical expertise and we provide subsequent follow-up support to the individual based on that information.
